A Nevis woman identified as Risha staged a one-person peaceful protest outside the Nevis Electricity Company, NEVLEC, on Wednesday, calling for relief from high electricity bills.
Risha said she began protesting at around 11:30 a.m., arguing that residents should not have to choose between paying for electricity and buying food.
“So I came here this morning around 11:30 a.m. to do a peaceful protest in front of NEVLEC for these very exorbitant electricity bills that we are paying. And my message is that we shouldn’t have to choose between buying food and paying electricity bills.”
In an accompanying Facebook post, Risha said Nevisian households have been receiving high bills for months. She claimed electricity costs on Nevis are the highest in the region and accused the government of having no plan to provide relief.
She also compared the situation with Antigua, Anguilla, Grenada, Saint Lucia and St. Kitts, where she claimed consumers are paying less. Freedom FM has not independently verified that regional comparison.
Risha urged residents to speak out against the situation.
“And before they did anything, they doubled down, and now the electricity is going to raise again. People need to stand up against this. This is a war against poor people.”
