The Caribbean is mourning the passing of Dean Emeritus, The Very Rev. James Rudolph Smithen, a towering Anglican leader whose ministry shaped generations in St. Kitts and Nevis and Antigua and Barbuda.
Born in Barnes Ghaut, Nevis, Smithen rose from humble beginnings to become one of the region’s most respected churchmen. After beginning ministry in Anguilla in 1973, he moved to Saint Kitts and Nevis in 1978, where his leadership at St. George’s Anglican Church in Basseterre transformed parish life.
He strengthened youth ministries, introduced structured confirmation training, developed choirs and altar servers, and mentored clergy who would go on to serve across the region.
Smithen later served as Dean of St. John’s Cathedral in Antigua and Barbuda, bringing decades of pastoral leadership to one of the Caribbean’s most historic Anglican institutions. In 2025, he published The Service of Holy Communion: Anglican Worship Explained, reflecting more than fifty years of ministry.
From Nevis to St. Kitts to Antigua, Dean Emeritus James Rudolph Smithen’s legacy remains woven into the spiritual fabric of the Caribbean.
