People’s Labour Party Leader Dr. Timothy Harris says worsening hardship has left some families unable to afford transportation for their children to attend school or keep their electricity connected.
Speaking Wednesday on Freedom FM’s The People’s Choice, Harris accused the Drew administration of being detached from the daily struggles of ordinary citizens. He described the situation as more than poverty, calling it “deep poverty.”
“So people are broke. I speak about the pauperisation of St. Kitts and Nevis because it’s not just poverty; it’s deep poverty. When you begin to look at the needs of the people, everywhere you go—up the Village—you see the signs of decadence, of neglect of the people and the communities. You go up St. Peter’s, it’s the same way. You go in Conaree, you go Cayon, you go Tabernacle, you go St. Paul’s, you go Old Road. Everywhere in St. Kitts and Nevis there’s a sign of neglect. There’s a sign that things are tight and tough, and everyone understands this except for the Government. They will tell you, ‘Hush, we are working.’ They are working on themselves.”
Harris made the comments while explaining the PLP’s selection of retired educator Patricia Isles-Caesar as its candidate for Constituency Number Five. He said her upbringing and decades of community service would allow her to understand the hardships facing residents and maintain what he described as the “common touch.”
