Basseterre, St. Kitts — Leader of the People’s Action Movement (PAM) and constituency candidate Natasha Shanny Grey Brookes has outlined her party’s proposal for a permanent student cost of living support programme, aimed at easing the financial burden on families across the Federation.

Speaking at a recent PAM press conference, Grey Brookes addressed the distinction between tuition-free education and the broader expenses associated with attending school. She noted that while government schools may not charge tuition, families continue to face significant costs related to uniforms, transportation, meals, school activities, and access to technology for assignments.

“Education is essential,” she said, adding that although tuition may be free, “the cost of being a student is at an all-time high,” placing considerable strain on households.

Grey Brookes announced that a PAM-led administration would introduce what she described as a “student cost of living gift,” structured as a permanent support programme for students in secondary and tertiary education. According to the proposal, the initiative would provide direct assistance to parents and guardians to help offset education-related expenses.

She stated that the subsidy would aim to relieve families, support students’ well-being, and contribute to broader economic activity. The PAM leader emphasized that the party views investment in students as critical to national development.

Drawing on her professional background in law, Grey Brookes said evidence indicates that many families are struggling to meet basic needs while supporting their children’s education. She framed the proposed programme as part of a broader commitment to prioritizing children’s welfare and household stability.

The proposal forms part of PAM’s policy platform as the party prepares for the upcoming general election. Further details regarding eligibility, funding mechanisms, and implementation timelines were not disclosed during the press conference.
